Drum Sounds & Heads

The big question, acoustic or electric setups?

Both have their pros and cons, and it's important to know the differences before making a decision. Let's talk about which would be best.

-Acoustic Drum Sets

Acoustic drums are the traditional type of drum set that has been used for decades. Made up of wooden shells, metal hoops, and drumheads that are struck with drumsticks to produce sound. The sound produced by an acoustic drum set is warmer and more natural than that produced by an electric drum set. Also, most drummers go to set, mine too!

One of the advantages of an acoustic drum set is that it produces a wider range of tones and sounds than an electric drum set. You can also tune an acoustic drum set to achieve different tones and sounds. They also offer a more authentic drumming experience because you can feel the vibrations and beat of the drums as you play.

However, acoustic drum sets can be quite loud, making them unsuitable for use in quiet environments. They also require a lot of space and can be difficult to transport. The drumheads will also need to be replaced periodically, and the set will require regular maintenance to keep it in good condition. Some quality cymbals can cost hundreds of dollars alone.

-Electric Drum Sets

Electric drums are a more recent innovation that has become increasingly popular in recent years. They consist of electronic pads that are struck with drumsticks, triggering sounds from an electronic module. The sound produced by an electric drum set is more consistent and can be customized through the use of electronic sound modules.

One of the benefits of an electric drum set is that it is much quieter than an acoustic drum set, making it ideal for use in environments where noise levels need to be kept low. They are also much more compact and easier to transport than acoustic drum sets. Electric drum sets also offer a range of additional features such as metronomes, recording capabilities, and built-in drum kits. Depending on the kit, they do have bells and other instrumental sounds you can use.

However, electric drum sets do not provide the same level of physical feedback as acoustic drum sets. They also have a more limited range of tones and sounds than acoustic drum sets. Electric drum sets also require a power source, which can be an issue in certain situations.

Which one rattles your funky bone the most?

Choosing between an acoustic and electric drum set ultimately depends on your personal preferences and needs. If you are looking for a more traditional drumming experience and want a wider range of tones and sounds, and you have a little extra cash to get the quality heads/cymbals, an acoustic drum set may be the better option. If you are looking for a quieter, more portable set with a range of additional features, usually cheaper, an electric drum set may be the better choice.

Whatever you choose, make sure you try out both options before making a decision! I know drummers who use the electric at home for practice and the acoustic set is for recording tracks and performances.

I hope this helped in choosing your next new set!

Reply with what your setup looks like and why you made it that way. I'll post the bangers next week!

Stay musical,
